Week 2: 12 – 18 December 2010

Sunday 12th December: Several more shoots are breaking through the soil. I am always amazed by the strength of these plants as the tiny shoots displace the heavy soil.

The propagator is set at a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius (80.6 degrees Fahrenheit) at the soil surface level.

The grow lights are switched on to 8 hours a day (9 am -5 pm)

The grow lights are ‘plug and grow’ 200 w (6400k) white/blue spectrum. The white /blue spectrum is good for vegetative growth in the early weeks of the trees. Later, around week 10 /11 I plan to replace the white/blue lights with white/red equivalents. The white/red lights encourage flower growth. In the grow tent there are 4 of these lights hung from the ceiling of the tent.

Moringa Oleifera trees like a ‘little and often’ approach to water in these early stages. Each tree is given 2 fluid ounces (an egg cup full) of water twice a week.
